Key innovation projects

Five key projects

To deliver our programme we are in the process of developing and initiating a series of key projects:

• Health Quest North East

Health Quest North East is a new approach and flexible model, making the most of a catalytic and competitive approach to support and stimulate the development of new answers to key social challenges, initially around health. The approach is designed to encourage new collaboration particularly between partners and sectors who are not currently working together, by competitively awarding increasing investment in the best ideas. Health Quest is in development and more information can be found in our brochure and we would welcome an opportunity to discuss your interest in this further.

• Innovation SuperNetwork

The Innovation SuperNetwork is designed to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration between and across sectors, bringing together existing sector networks from across the North East and linking funders and innovators. Part-funded through the 2014-2020 ERDF programme alongside Innovate UK and the North East LEP and delivered through the North East BIC. The SuperNetwork will deliver the promotion and organisation of key North East events such as Venturefest and FinanceCamp.

• Innovation Observatory

The Innovation Observatory will provide up-to-date, accurate and academically-robust intelligence on key innovation themes, translated for the North East environment. This will support a shared understanding of innovation in the North East, its characteristics and potential, based on business strengths as well as research capabilities. The model is explicitly intended to respond to practical business and service needs setting out new thinking and opportunities in a relevant and understandable way.

• Data for Growth

Data for Growth aims to make the most of our digital assets to support growth across North East sectors by supporting the development of solutions to address the key challenges faced by businesses. Similar to Health Quest, Data for Growth will include a mechanism to maximise opportunities for digital applications to solve these challenges; bringing together actors from different sectors and from the national Catapult network to develop new solutions to challenges and opportunities for growth. To inform our approach, Urban Foresight carried out a supporting piece of research which you can view here.

• Incubators programme

The Incubator Support Programme aims to have delivered at least five, new or upgraded integrated incubator projects between 2017 and 2021. Aligned with areas of smart specialisation and knowledge leadership it is centred on increasing our innovation capacity by improving facilities, reducing financial risks, enhancing commercialisation opportunities, support university spin outs and linking to inward investment, attraction and retention of high-skilled individuals and start-ups.
