The project involved realigning the highway, diverting public utilities and enhancing the public realm between Bishop Auckland Market Place and Auckland Castle.
This project entailed realigning the highway, diverting public utilities and enhancing the public realm between Bishop Auckland Market Place and Auckland Castle to facilitate to construction of the Auckland Project’s Welcome Building. The rationale behind public realm investments is to generate positive economic, social and environmental outcomes through delivering improvements to a town centre or other public space.
This can include improving the appearance of a town centre through the upgrading of shop frontages, the installation of public seating, art works or spaces and street widening to accommodate greater levels of footfall and reduce the potential barriers of accessibility caused by poor quality public realm. A good quality public realm can deliver economic benefits through a number of mechanisms, through forming economic benefit ‘streams’ through which economic impacts are delivered.
